Valencia, February 2021. 5TONIC, the open research and innovation laboratory on 5G technologies, founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks, signs a collaboration agreement with the Spanish SME Fivecomm, based in Valencia, focused on the research and development of 5G solutions for the industry verticals.
The objective of this agreement is the integration and validation of the FIVECOMM 5G Modem (F5GM) as part of the 5TONIC research and innovation laboratory. Such agreement represents a great opportunity for Fivecomm, as the module will be tested in an end-to-end complete 5G solution. During the collaboration, the F5GM will be modified to be updated in the context of the latest 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) releases.
This collaboration takes place within the framework of the H2020 EU 5G-INDUCE project, with special focus in 5G services for the Industry 4.0. The estimated duration of the project will extend until the end of 2023 and will take place at the 5TONIC facilities in Madrid, being the basis for testing and refining the product. The research will also include the AGVs (automated guided vehicles) from ASTI Mobile Robotics, available at 5TONIC lab and the deployment of Ericsson’s 5G SA (Stand Alone) network.
Fivecomm’s mission is to facilitate the adoption of 5G technologies by vertical industries such as robotics, automotive, education, healthcare, energy, or the Industry 4.0. For Héctor Donat, Fivecomm’s CEO, this collaboration is “extremely beneficial for us and a great opportunity to keep working on 5G research applied to the industry, one of our most important pillars. In Fivecomm, we have experts in 5G technologies that will provide their know-how and experience to 5TONIC”.
Arturo Azcorra, Vicepresident of the 5TONIC lab, “we are very pleased to add a new collaborator to the laboratory. A growing number of companies are joining 5TONIC to innovate and develop projects together with other companies. Our collaborative formula makes possible to achieve particular objectives jointly”.
5TONIC was initiated by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute with a clear vision to create an open research and innovation ecosystem laboratory in which industry and academia come together to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development, joint entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites, all in an international environment of the highest impact. 5TONIC serves to show the capabilities and interoperation of pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications, by leading global companies in the 5G arena. The laboratory was recently awarded Digital Innovation Hub status by the European Commission.
